Established as a base for sea otter hunters, Fort Ross State Historic Park presents several reconstructed buildings, including the first Russian Orthodox chapel south of Alaska. Consecrated on July 4, 1823 by Father Jose Altimira as a location for his mission. Also on the mission were 700 Indians, some soldiers and a priest from Spain.
